Crape myrtle
Distinguishing feature: Brightly colored or white, odorless, pyramid-shaped flower clusters.
- Type: Deciduous.
- Form in maturity: Oval. May be single or multi-trunked.
- Leaf: Shiny deep green, 1 to 2 inches long, smooth edges, pale underneath. Sometimes, leaves have alternate arrangement on upper branches. Red, yellow or orange fall color.
- Flower: Brightly colored or white, odorless flower clusters, roughly pyramid-shaped, occurring in summer.
- Bark: Smooth, peeling, creating light and dark patches.
- Fruit or seed: Small, round clusters of seed capsules harden in fall and stay on in the winter.
- Other: Many varieties exist. Flowers may be pink, red, white, or purple.
